Abstract

The English band Black Sabbath represented a milestone in the history of music, presenting to the world, in the early 1970s, a dark and heavy sound and lyrical themes, giving rise to heavy metal. We seek to analyze, in this text, the presence of biblical elements, more specifically eschatological, in the songs of their first three albums. In the first section, we present some theoretical and methodological questions about music as an object of research in religious studies, having as main references the works of Marcos Napolitano on music and history and of Arnaldo Érico Huff Jr. about religion and music. In the sequence, we seek to analyze the historical and cultural context of the late 1960s, within which Black Sabbath's work must be understood. In the last two sections we dedicate to the analysis of the musical production of the band in the beginning of the 1970s. initially, analyzing the characteristics of the work, taking into account the sound, the instrumental performance, the lyrics, the history and the beliefs shared with the audience. Finally, we analyze the biblical and eschatological elements in the lyrics of some songs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
