Abstract

Aging population in the Valencian Community poses challenges to be addressed urgently, especially in rural areas. 297 municipalities in the interior have an ageing rate of over 20 %. Among them, 52 municipalities are at risk of depopulation. The key to successful ageing is to maintain the balance between the capabilities and limitations of the ageing person and the resources in the environment. Friendly, adapted spaces and adequate social and health resources make it possible to age with quality of life. Ageing at home is a goal desired by most people; it helps to maintain the continuity of the life course, to live autonomously, but the community and social resources must offer the necessary support to make it possible. The aim of this research is to know the needs derived from the situation of dependency in people over 65 years old who need care, the needs expressed by their caregivers and the existing resources, analysing the case of La Vall dels Alcalans (Ribera Alta Region, Valencia), with 1,849 people over 65 years old (784 in a situation of dependency, 42.4 %), 668 over 80 years old, and mostly women. The article reflects on the need to take care of the care that is required in each place. Longevity entails a greater demand for long-term care, adequate resources and services, territorialized and sustainable actions. This is a cross-cutting problem that requires a joint effort from different regional and municipal administrations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
