Abstract

Seeking for medical care by people with gender dysphoria has raised in the last years. These individuals feel incongruences between their assigned sex at birth and their gender identity. Revision about gender dysphoria, included management and treatment. Retrospective review of published articles in PUBMED, between January 2009 and November 2017. Patients with gender dysphoria should be accompanied by a multidisciplinary team, including a pedopsychiatrist, a psychologist and a pediatric endocrinologist. In the adulthood, follow up of these individuals is performed in a Sexology appointment or in a Unit dedicated to gender dysphoria. Gender transformation is initiated, after confirmation of the diagnosis. Hormone therapy and surgical treatment are offered. Expression of their gender identity is encouraged, and its psychological and social consequences are managed. In Portugal, legal sex and name change can be done by individuals over 16 years old, but surgical procedures are done only when they are 18. Adolescents should feel confident and free to talk about their sexuality and gender identity, without judgments. Treatment of gender dysphoria is individualized and involves a multidisciplinary approach, that might or might not end in body changes. Hormone and surgical treatment are two options, among others, to help these people identifying with themselves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
