I have photographed the materialities of devotion to Our Lady as an exercise to understand Catholic devotional practices and this visual essay brings together a selection of Virgin Mary images in the Netherlands. In this case, the ethnographic work led to a contrast with the materialities in my usual fieldwork because it is a secularized European country with a Protestant tradition that leaves little room for this kind of devotion.
