Tendência temporal e distribuição espacial de homicídios em homens jovens no estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil, 1996-2016.

Background: Homicide is the main cause of death for young men with several causes and its study can support intervention measures. Objective: To analyze the temporal trend and spatial distribution of homicides among young men in the health regions of the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, 1996-2016. Method: This is an ecological study with data from the Mortality Information System. Homicide rates among young men by health region were calculated. Prais-Winsten generalized linear regression was used. Results: 8,383 homicides were registered in young men in the studied period, with an average growth of 62% of the rates that varied from 67.4 to 134.5 / 100 thousand inhabitants. Spatial analysis revealed differences between health regions and increased rates over the years in most of them (9/16). Seven health regions showed an increasing time trend and, as in the state, the others (56.2%) showed a stable trend, but with high rates maintained. Conclusion: There was an increase in the homicide rate among young men in Mato Grosso, with differences in trends and the magnitude of rates between regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
