Abstract

Dry Eye Disease (DED) is a pathology that can be caused by genetic and environmental factors. It is characterized by the loss of homeostasis of the tear film, triggering symptoms such as pain, burning, redness, blurred vision, tearing, and photophobia. It is emphasized that the treatments are aimed at restoring the ocular surface and reducing tear film instability. Hyaluronic acid (HA) has emerged as a promising treatment for this disease. The aim of this study was to seek rationale for this condition and to evaluate the efficacy of the use of HA in its treatment. The methodology used was a literature search based on the descriptor: "{(Hyaluronic Acid)} AND {(Dry Eye)}" in the PubMed and Science Direct databases. Of the 4652 articles selected, 38 that related DED and HA. In this perspective, there are several mechanisms that are part of the pathophysiology of DED, which run with the loss of tear film homeostasis. Thus, HA, with its various applicability, has become a therapeutic option due to its different modes of application and its very few side effects. However, the importance of the development of an updated protocol and the continuity of studies on this condition is still emphasized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
