Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical procedure that administers oxygen at high pressure for therapeutic purposes. This treatment can be successfully applied to children with developmental problems, includ)ing those with autism who may experience physiological abnormalities that could be positively affected by the therapy. Studies have identified positive changes in physiology and/or behavior following hyperbaric therapy in children with autism. Hyperbaric therapy improves cerebral perfusion, is anti-inflammatory, and does not worsen oxidative stress in children with autism. The pressure in the hyperbaric chambers can reduce inflammation which restricts blood flow to areas of a child's brain responsible for speech and social interaction.
