The discourse marker function of “不得不说 (budebushou)” is analyzed based on corpus, and the formation of the function is discussed with pragmatic inference and the evolution of modality, semantics, structure and distribution. The core function of the discourse marker “不得不说 (budebushuo)” is to express the speaker’s evaluation or view of things based on objective reasons. Its specific functions can be divided into the interpersonal function of responding to the other ’s point of view and directly evaluating the other party as well as the discourse function of changing the topic to introduce the ensuing text and expressing evaluations on the topic. The discourse marker function of “不得不说 (budebushuo)” was formed in the late Qing Dynasty. It experienced the evolution path of “verbal phrase-adverbial phrase-discourse marker”, and shifted from objective to subjective and passive to active. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
