This article has two objectives. On the one hand, to defend the historical reality of Diotima, based on the analysis of ancient sources and research of contemporary thinkers. On the other hand, to demonstrate that Socrates' speech about love, in the dialogue Symposium, is part of a teaching transmitted to the Athenian philosopher by this woman, in such a way that Diotima should be considered, rather than a mask of Socrates, as the representation of one of the first female philosophers in the history of Western thought.
