Abstract

The 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity included a 2010 supplemental agreement-the "Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing of genetic resources"-that sought to provide protocols for fair-sharing between the higher-income countries in which those resources often are deposited (including but not exclusively biological samples used to derive DNA/RNA/amino acid sequences, and databases derived from them) and lower-income countries from which the original materials were harvested. As background, the foundation for research conducted by many members of the American Society of Mammalogists (ASM) relies on field sampling of wild populations of mammals in nations beyond the borders of higher-income countries in the Northern Hemisphere, for example, in lower-income countries in the Southern Hemisphere (the "Global South").
