Abstract

In this interview, Cardinal Daniel Sturla, Archbishop of Montevideo, highlights the Church in Uruguay as poor, free, small, and beautiful. Despite the country's historical secularization, the Church has managed to establish a positive dialogue with society. Although the number of Catholics has decreased, the Church has intensified its evangelizing efforts and its commitment to the most needy. Additionally, the implementation of protocols for the protection of minors and prevention courses to address cases of sexual abuse are mentioned. Finally, the upcoming beatification of Jacinto Vera, the first bishop of Uruguay, is mentioned. The article also addresses the figure of Bishop Jacinto Vera and his role in the organization of the Uruguayan Church, as well as the importance of synodality and the current challenges of the Church in its mission.
