Abstract

Josephine the Singer or A People of Mice: Franz Kafka, translated by Karin Doerr with Gary Evans, with an introduction by Karin Doerr. In particular, the passage from the story noting how Josephine's people live at all times in the shadow of the threat of violence is read as a direct reference to the climate of antisemitism in which Kafka lived. As Doerr explains in her introduction, This translation wishes to capture Kafka's language, even though it is the Prague German of his era, one hundred years ago, whose community has since vanished.
