Abstract

Introduction: The emotions felt by dental students during patient treatment can influence motivation, commitment to work, mental and physical health, and learning, in a good or bad way. Aim: The main objective of this study was to assess the emotional state of students during a paediatric dental consultation and compared to that of an adult patient. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Questionnaire about the emotions experienced was completed immediately after each dental extraction performed by dental students (n = 143). We evaluated various positive and negative emotions such as self-confidence, satisfaction, stress or even. Results: Treating children are a source of anxiety for students. They were less confident and felt communications difficulties with young patients. The availability of a clinical educator and pair work were reassuring factors. Conclusion: Caring for a child is more stressful for the student, with a panel of emotions different from the ones experienced with adult patients. Our results help to understand why paediatric dentistry is underappreciated by students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
