Abstract

The study was aimed to analyze the association between suicide risk and the use of coping strategies in the face of stress, in school adolescents. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 565 students from 11 schools in Montería (Córdoba, Colombia), between the ages of 15 and 17, who answered the Plutchik Suicide Risk Scale and the Coping Strategies Scale modified. The results obtained show that the risk of suicide in the sample of school adolescents was 28.8%. An association was found between suicidal risk and coping strategies: emotional avoidance, religion, aggressive reaction and expression difficult to cope with. These results are useful for designing comprehensive psychological interventions aimed at promoting positive coping skills as a fundamental element in the process of coping with stress for the prevention of suicide risk in the school environment, under a multisectoral approach to public health.
