Abstract
- Even though a large majority of young people consider gender-based violence as a serious social problem, in recent years opinions are increasing that tend to deny or limit the importance of genderbased violence in youth relationships. This research try to discover if the content of urban music songs that are currently extraordinarily successful among young audiences have a responsibility in the normalization of gender violence. To do this, analysed the use and consumption that young Spaniards make of Reggaeton and Trap songs based on a survey of 1000 individuals of both sexes, aged between 15 and 25 years. The intersection of sociodemographic, cultural and educational variables with the characteristics of urban music consumption, the theme of the songs and the form of exhibition lead us to conclude that Reggaeton and Trap songs, based on continuous novelty and violent and sexist lyrics, are one of the most powerful influences when it comes to transmitting values to young people who are very attracted to these sounds in a stage of personal development where they question the values transmitted by the family and the educational system.
