Abstract

Quartz lithic technology was relevant for the human populations that inhabited the El Alto-Ancasti mountain range (Catamarca) during the first millennium AD. This is characterized by the presence of very simple retouched tools with very low labor investment. However, in the Oyola 7 rockshelter, we have identified a set of projectile points, which show a certain variety of designs, but also a greater work investment due to the bifacial manufacture and certain standardization of sizes and shapes. The main goal of this paper is therefore to present the technological characteristics of this set of projectile points, emphasizing the context in which they come from, a cave with rock art and which is the only archaeological site in which projectile points were recorded in this area of eastern Catamarca.
