Abstract

The biggest contradiction in the Yellow River Basin is the shortage of water resources. Based on agricultural, industrial and ecological water use, this paper identified the current situation of water shortage in the basin. It was predicted that in 2035, the water demand in the Yellow River Basin would reach 54.5 billion m³, while the water shortage would reach 13.6 billion m³, due to the changing situation of water resources in the Yellow River Basin, ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin and other national strategic requirements. Especially, the water shortage in six provinces in the upper and middle regions would reach 10.3 billion m³, accounting for 76% of the total, which made them the most severe regions. The West Route of South-to-North Water Transfer Project can be a fundamental measure to solve these water shortage problems. Those six provinces are the main water-receiving areas and can be supplied with 8 billion m³ of water in the first phase of this project, which can meet the rigid domestic and industrial water demand.
