Abstract

Chapter 2 looks at image metaphors, primary metaphors, compound metaphors, dead metaphors and the ways that they are mixed. It is suggested that mixed metaphors can be avoided by keeping incompatible metaphors apart, choosing irrelevant metaphors or selecting dead metaphors (p. 43). In Chapter 3, Sullivan summarizes three ways that metaphors are mixed: (i) putting metaphors together within a sentence (ii) choosing similar and related metaphors and (iii) selecting novel and living metaphors.
