Abstract

The accelerated growth of the western world has had disastrous consequences on the planet. Human activities, the depredation of the environment, excessive consumerism and another series of factors, lead to the exacerbation of a crisis that, although it is not new, in the 20th and 21st centuries, has found its peak. This reality affects everyone equally, without distinction of social classes or specific political conditions; It is a global, multifactorial problem, treated from interdisciplinary and transversal approaches, being a permanent concern for researchers in the areas of natural sciences, social sciences and for educators, in charge of transmitting knowledge. By virtue of the above, this article focuses its attention on three fundamental aspects: 1. The characterization of climatic change and its incidence on planetary deterioration. 2. The role of education in the fight against climate change, its scope and limitations, in addition to the investment made to make this topic a priority for formal and informal education at an international level. 3. The necessary articulation of education to the common struggles for sustainable development, to achieve a balance between progress, human actions and nature. The method used is the hermeneutic-documentary. It concludes in the urgency of transcending the formal teaching of environmental education, articulating common efforts, linking the community, the State and companies to achieve a sustained and sustainable future over time.
