Abstract

The article comments on Harlem's growing population. Harlem may be growing too large for its streets, opine city planners and community organizers. At a recent public meeting, city officials with the Department of Economic Development, Transportation and Planning shared results from a transportation study done in Harlem and Morningside Heights that revealed congestion along the neighborhood's 125th Street spine. Looking at problems of slow public transit, clogged streets and a lack of public parking, the "River-to-River Study," is one element of a Department of City Planning project to rezone the 125th Street corridor between the Harlem and Hudson rivers, a stretch of Manhattan real estate rapidly gaining public notice as it shoots up in both height and price.
