Abstract
- "I represent the [salmon farming] sector, so my bias is on my sleeve", Kingzett told Canadian Wildlife, adding that politics not science is guiding the government's decisions around the future of salmon farming. Contrary to what industry advocates would have you believe, research has shown that parasites and pathogens that thrive among Atlantic salmon crowded into fish farms can be transmitted to wild salmon. NOT LONG AGO, UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA fisheries scientist Rashid Sumaila was at a conference talking about the urgent need to work hard to ensure that wild fish stocks are conserved for the benefit of current and future generations. DFO documents show she informed the industry last June of her concerns about new science pointing to the potential of additional impacts from fish farms on dwindling wild salmon stocks, while emphasizing the importance of the Discovery Islands for migrating salmon.
