Abstract

Audrey was the first hurricane to form in the Gulf of Mexico since 1945 and remains the most powerful June hurricane on record in the Atlantic basin, by pressure. Hurricane Rita completely destroyed Holly Beach, Peveto Beach, Cameron, and other locales along the shoreline with 120-mph winds and an 18-foot storm surge, the highest ever recorded in the state. Lapped by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the shoreline of Southwest Louisiana has some of the most beautiful stretches of beach in the world. [Extracted from the article]
