The concept of determinism contextualizes the problem of induction: how can we establish general truths from particular observations, or how can we predict future events from singular facts of the present? In the search for a principle of induction, Jules Lachelier goes through the foundations proposed by formal logic, by the empiricist and rationalist tendencies, by those coming from naturalism and intuitionist psychologism, and by those of metaphysics.
