Abstract

Banditry was the main focus of the majority of studies on Ottoman tribes. These arguments stemmed from a limited understanding of the definition and history of the Ottoman tribes. However, recent researches have revealed that Ottoman tribes were connected to the Ottoman social, economic, and political life. The function and major contributions of Ottoman tribes to the Ottoman mining and army logistics were investigated in this study. Tribes had a vital role in the Ottoman mining and army logistics due to the abundance of their camels. Tribal camels were primarily utilized for moving mined raw materials to smelters and Baruthane-i Amire, as well as moving the munitions made there to troops and fronts. Tribal camels also transported food items like rusks and grains to the army in the front. Until the end of the Ottoman Empire, tribal camels were employed for transportation since they were faster and more costeffective in rough terrains. Using Ottoman archival records, this study describes and analyzes the crucial roles played by the tribes in some mining and transportation operations related to the logistics of the Ottoman land army.
