Abstract
- Recently, three-dimensional printing technology has been used in many areas such as medicine, fine arts, machinery, aeronautics and even food industry. In this study, a scale effect on the printed geogrids was focused in order to evaluate the usability of mentioned technology that allows printing of all type of solid matters, in geotechnical area. Especially, geogrids should be scaled with respect to proportion of reduced soil cell, within the scaled studies in laboratory. Otherwise, the assumptions and the boundary conditions of experiments cannot represent the real situations in the field. Therefore, geogrids produced in 1:1, 1:2 and 1:4 scales were subjected to tensile strength tests and shear box tests in addition to original geogrids called as reference ones. The average tensile strength of an ABS filament, which is the raw material of printouts, was calculated as 14.6 MPa at 1.45% strain level. Although the printing quality as a 0.1 mm and 0.2 mm layer thickness does not have a serious effect on the tensile strength, the ultimate tensile strength and related strain values decrease when the scale ratio decreases. On the other hand, an average of 10% increase in shear stress was observed in three-dimensional geogrid printouts containing shear box experiments, if these are compared with original geogrid reinforced tests.
