Abstract

Social perception of the information management of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is studied in a sample of 300 subjects, 206 women (68.7%) and 94 men (31.3%) from Mexico City. The research investigated: means of consumption; reasons for sharing information; information verification; moods when they are informed; importance of veracity of the source and proposals to confront fake news. The results show that social networks are the most consulted to obtain information (56.7%), the predominant mood is uncertainty (41.7%) and that they share information that seems to be true (65%). Information from universities (8.42) and international health authorities (8.13) are considered more reliable, on a scale of 1 to 10. They maintain that false information about the epidemic prevails (94.7%), which is considered very harmful, that it is given out of ignorance (43.4%) and that 7 out of 10 people believe false information. A great political polarization was observed in the perceptions of the pandemic between those who support the López Obrador government and the opposition. The sample expressed that scientific information (53.4%) is necessary to avoid false information, that it is necessary to educate on sanitary measures (36%) and promote critical thinking (32%).
