Abstract

In Goldie's formulation, there are various iterations of Locke: one who adhered to establishments in the 1650s and most of the 1660s; a radical who served with Shaftesbury in the 1670s and 1680s; and a post-revolutionary Locke, who was a reconciled Williamite in the 1690s. The first, and largest, section covers the politics and religion of the Restoration regime, which is viewed within the paradigm of Goldie's concept of Anglican royalism. Delphine Soulard builds on Goldie's earlier work on the reception of Locke in the English-speaking Atlantic by focusing on the circulation of Locke's works in the francophone world.
