Abstract

Throughout the 20th century, service stations tried to develop architectural solutions that could not always be faced by works on a larger scale or commitment. In the 1950s and 1960s, petrol stations differentiated the refueling area from the service area, giving rise to unique roof solutions, supported by independent central elements, halfway between geometric sculpture and structural display. The works of well-known international architects were then the references sought by Spanish architects. Representative cases of those new typologies and their relationship with similar foreign stations are studied in this article. Comparative graphic analyses allow us to identify similarities and differences, concluding that their authors did not limit themselves to transcribe such references literally, but rather reinterpreted or adapted solutions outside the limitations of an autarkic country that was still suffering the consequences of its Civil War.
