Abstract

Examination of biologically active compounds obtained from plants is among the most researched subjects recently. The fact that the flora of Turkey has a very rich structure shows that it is important to research the plants that grow in this geography. In this study, essential oils obtained from 3 taxa of Hypericum genus, which has an old and widespread use as a chemical component and an important medicinal plant, were investigated in terms of their antibacterial effects. Hypericum spectabile Jaub. & Spach (endemic species), Hypericum scabrum L., Hypericum venustum Fenzl. the essential oils of the species were obtained by using the distillation method. The antibacterial effects of these obtained oils are known to be resistant to many drugs in vitro; Enterobacter aerogenes (ATCC 13048), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), Salmonella enteritidis (ATCC 13075), Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus (ATCC 25923), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) and Serratia marcescens (ATCC 13880) pathogenic bacteria. Different extraction extracts of the species were analyzed using the well agar test for antibacterial activity against various microorganisms. It was observed that all extracts showed varying rates (4.80±0.87-27.73±1.27 mm) activity against all tested pathogen strains. These species can be shown among the newly evaluated species in the literature in terms of antibacterial activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
