Abstract

The article attempts to understand a controversial passage from Hippolytus, Contra Noetum 10,1-11,2, in which at first Wisdom seems to be different from the Word, and then seems to be identified with it. Now, the activities Hippolytus assigns to the Word and to Wisdom, respectively, are the same as those that Irenaeus also assigns to them; nevertheless, for Irenaeus, Wisdom is the Holy Spirit. On the other hand, Irenaeus sometimes assigns the activity of a divine person to the higher one in the order of economy, probably according to the theological conception that the Spirit proceeds from the Word. By this parallel it is possible to explain why Hippolytus first differentiates between Wisdom and the Word, and afterwards identifies them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
