Abstract

The article "Greek inscriptions as aids for understanding lament and thanksgiving psalms" discusses the use of Greek inscriptions from Asia Minor for a better interpretation of lament and thanksgiving psalms in the Old Testament. The question is raised whether older texts have influenced younger ones or whether similar life situations have led to comparable reactions without the texts being dependent on each other. Numerous stone inscriptions from the western part of present-day Turkey are mentioned, which are referred to as confession or expiation inscriptions and contain elements such as misconduct, punitive reaction of the deity, confession, restitution, doxology, and admonition. The use of these inscriptions could contribute to a better understanding of the original occasion of some psalms. [Extracted from the article]
