Abstract

The previous studies on flood evolution in floodplains followed the analysis method of channel flood evolution, which failed to fully reflect the characteristics of floodplain evolution in floodplains. Taking the Changyuan beach in the lower reaches of the Yellow River as an example, this paper proposed a two-line flood evolution diagram of flood flow and direction changing with time in the floodplain. According to the characteristics of flood water volume, the flood evolution characteristics of the floodplain were divided into four types: complete flood discharge, stable flood storage, increasing flood storage, and peak storage and stagnation. According to the flood direction characteristics, the flood evolution characteristics of the floodplain were divided into four types: monostable independent type, single-variable independent type, double-variable independent type, and double-variable cross type. It could more intuitively reflect the distribution characteristics of flood inflow and outflow water volume and direction at different locations in the floodplain. By analyzing the three characteristic values of concentration, consistency and turning angle, the process of flood in the floodplain from dispersion to concentration and then to dispersal under different inundation time and topographical conditions in Changyuan floodplain was analyzed, in order to lay a foundation for the determination of flood inundation information in the floodplain in the future.
