Abstract
- The article examines the leadership styles of recent Popes in the Catholic Church. It argues that Benedict XVI and John Paul II both tolerated dissent and sought to shepherd the faithful in ways that would not worsen the fragmentation of the Church. They did not champion progressive ideas but recognized the reality of a fragmented Church after Vatican II. It also tells that the Catholic Church operates on a system of patronage.
