Abstract

I Dental Cementum in Anthropology i , edited by Naji, Rendu, and Gourichon, represents an important and long-awaited undertaking that updates scholars on the latest research on cementochronology (the study of cementum growth). Part I of the book presents an excellent overview of cementum biology, its past (Chapter 1) and current (Chapters 2-5) state of knowledge, and its research potential, including nondestructive imaging approaches to cementum microstructure (Chapters 6 and 7) and its use in life history studies (Chapter 8). As such, I believe that a comprehensive review on the impact of taphonomy to cementum microstructure was needed, as was a more nuanced approach to current limitations and the many loose ends that are still associated with cementum growth and variation.
