Abstract

The article presents the proceedings of the IPNA Seventh Symposium on Growth and Development in Children with Chronic Kidney Disease: The Molecular Basis of Skeletal Growth. Children with chronic renal failure (CRF) fail to attain adult height consistent with their genetic potential. The profound growth failure is multifactorial; major contributing factors include accumulation of uremic toxins and inhibitors of hormone action, renal osteodystrophy, and metabolic acidosis, malnutrition and drug toxicity, particularly of glucocorticoids. The Seventh Symposium on Growth and Development in Children with Chronic Kidney Disease, "The Molecular Basis of Skeletal Growth", by the International Pediatric Nephrology Association (IPNA) continued a tradition that was initiated in 1977 and led to regular scientific symposia every three to five years.
