This article charts the attempt made by Guido Gonella (Minister of Education in 1946-1951) to reform Italy’s schools after World War II and the country’s return to democracy, as enshrined in its republican Constitution. The attempt failed for various reasons, but the inquiry that preceded it, the studies it generated, and the (sometimes bitter) ideological, political and cultural debate it prompted were neither pointless nor sterile. The new season of Italian schooling that began in the 1950s and 1960s was grounded on those earlier efforts, and on perspectives they succeeded, albeit with difficulty and only temporarily, in bringing to the fore.
