Abstract

The research aims to identify the level of Arabic vocabulary for first-year students in the Department of Arabic Language and Literature, International Islamic University, Malaysia, and to discover the strategies that students use in learning vocabulary, and the difficulties in learning them. A test had been conducted to determine their vocabulary level using the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale according to Paribakht and Wesche. The test focused on the students' ability to understand vocabulary in terms of its meaning without looking at the dictionary and their ability to use vocabulary to build a complete sentence. Therefore, the test came with fifteen vocabulary containing nouns and verbs that are commonly used at the university level. In addition, a questionnaire had been distributed to find out the strategies that students use in learning vocabulary and its difficulties. After conducting the study, it is found that the level of Arabic vocabulary among those students is very good. The result of the questionnaire indicates that most of the students learn Arabic vocabulary from the media and only a few of them learn Arabic vocabulary from books and magazines. One of the most difficult things in learning vocabulary for them is to memorize Arabic vocabulary without knowing its meanings, and they found that the lectures conducted in Arabic really help them in knowing Arabic vocabulary.
