Abstract

With the French Revolution that took place in 1789, the France, which presented new social and political concepts such as Nationalism and Nation-state to the world political literature, liquidated the Ancient regime (Kingdom) as a result of this revolution. The old regime (Ancient Regime) was replaced by the Republic government. This new government led to the establishment of a centralized state structure and the establishment of a centralized bureaucratic system. As a result of this new government model that emerged in the country, the nation-state and the society caused another set of concepts to come to the fore. These concepts are minorities and assimilation. France, which claims to be a consolidated democracy, has followed a harsh and uncompromising policy to assimilate different ethnic elements within its country and to create a homogeneous society as a result of its new government mentality. This policy, from time to time has become more intolerant with support from the French society. The killing of the leaders of the Breton national movement by the French resistance movement during the Second World War was a graphic example to that intolerant attitude. Of course, the oppressive and assimilating attitude towards minorities in France is not limited to the Bretons. The Basques, Corsicans and the people of the Langeudoc-Roussillon region could be the other examples for this oppressive attitude. However, due to its connections with Celtic nationalism and its more well-known nature, the Breton National Movement is chosen as an case study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
