This paper offers a pragmatic study of a sequence of supplication speech acts between Telemachus and the Trojan heroes Nestor and Menelaus. It examines the linguistic phenomena of both the main speech act of supplication and its secondary speech act. This is approached from Blum-Kulka y Olshtain’s (1984) concept of macro-directive speech acts and Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory of verbal (im)politeness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
