Abstract

This article analyzes the historical role of Brazilian modernism beyond the direct effects of the 1922 Modern Art Week. The Brazilian modernism is seen, from the point of view of this research, as a social formation, artistic movement, and cultural institution as a whole. From this perspective, we will analyze the trajectory of "long modernism" in Brazil, that provided the basis of a cultural and political agenda and guided a set of cultural actions and projects sharing the structure of felling on "Brazilianness", based on racial miscegenation, on the search for a cultural language common to all races and classes, and the vision of the intellectual as a tutor of the national conscience. The historical changes throughout the 1980s, produced by the responses of the new social movements to the challenges and impasses generated by the authoritarian modernization imposed by the 1964 Military Regime marked the end of the Brazilian modernist agenda.
