Abstract

The article addresses the Hispanic-Jewish influence on the cultural development of Spain, highlighting the importance of Jews and converts in cultural activity and the development of the Spanish language and literature. It reviews the historiographic and philological research on the Jewish presence in the Iberian Peninsula and their contributions to the cultural and literary development of Spain. It discusses the presence of Jewish communities in the Nasrid kingdom of Granada and their participation in commercial and artisanal activities. It also mentions the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 and their influence on the cultural development of the country. The translation work carried out by Hispanic-Jews in the court of King Alfonso X is highlighted, which boosted the use and prestige of Castilian as a language of high culture. In addition, the influence of Hispanic-Jews on the cultural development of Spain is analyzed from the origin of Spanish literature and the first manifestations of Castilian as a language of culture. The hypothesis is raised that a Jew was the creator of the moaxaja, a literary genre. The influence of Jewish culture in Spain has been decisive for its cultural flourishing, although it has disappeared from the collective consciousness of Spaniards. However, interest in the Jewish presence in Spanish culture is increasing. [Extracted from the article]
