Abstract

Different studies have tried to identify risk factors and possible biological and biomechanical associations to prevent the development of peri-implant diseases. Purpose: To determine the frequency and possible associations between peri-implant diseases and potential risk factors. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study on 75 patients with 318 implants placed between the 2008 and 2015 was conducted. Data were collected from clinical records and patient and implant conditions to determine the frequency of peri-implant disease and its associations with possible risk factors. Results: Periimplant disease total frequency was 81.33 % in the patients assessed. The frequency of peri-implant mucositis and periimplantitis at patient level was 74.7 % and 34.7 %, respectively. The frequency of peri-implant mucositis at the implant level was 55.7 % and the frequency of peri-implantitis was 20.7 %. Previous history of periodontal disease and the presence of active periodontal disease, smoking status, implant diameter, and less than 2 mm of keratinized mucosa were related to an increase of the prevalence of peri-implant disease. Conclusions: Total frequency of peri-implant disease was 81.33 %. Periodontitis as a history or current disease and the absence of supportive maintenance therapy seem to be factors associated with the onset and progress of these pathologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
