Abstract

Intercultural communication is a communication and interaction process that takes place between individuals from different cultures. In this process, the aim is to understand each other, to recognize each other's cultural values, and to prevent possible conflicts when individuals from different cultures come together. Intercultural communication is based on two-way communication instead of one-way communication; and depends on interaction and reciprocity rather than persuasive communication. Culture is learned in the first years of human life. For this reason, the role of mass media contents prepared for children in the carrier of culture is worth examining. Based on this idea, in this study, it is aimed to determine the cultural codes of the comics book "Diary of Wimpy Kid" in the context of intercultural communication. In this context, the fourteen volumes of Diary of Wimpy Kid were analyzed within the framework of Onion Model of Culture of Geert Hofstede. The data obtained were examined under the headings of values, rituals, heroes and symbols. Accordingly, it was concluded that the comics book Diary of Wimpy Kid was equipped with cultural codes in terms of introducing American culture to individuals from different cultures.
