Abstract

The article presents a study on the numerical modeling of the rupture of a viscoplastic dam using the WCSPH method. The authors propose an effective viscosity approach to apply the Herschel-Bulkley nonlinear viscosity model to the numerical method of smoothed particle hydrodynamics with artificial compressibility. The effectiveness of this approximation is verified using a two-dimensional case of the collapse of a mud block. The study shows how this approach can improve the stability of the numerical method and provide results consistent with experimental observations. Possible improvements for future work are mentioned, such as considering the cohesion of the mud with the boundaries and improving the smoothness of the contour at the advancing front.
