Abstract
- RETINAL DISEASE Dr de Silva: The field of inherited retinal diseases has,over the past decade, seen an explosion in differenttherapeutic strategies being investigated to slow diseaseprogression or even potentially restore visual functionin end-stage disease. Ophthalmology is ideally suited to participatein this new development because we are facing a dramaticallyincreasing number of patients suffering fromage-related diseases such as AMD, diabetes, glaucomaand cataract. Patient counselling needs to start more effectivelybefore patients come into the clinic. 48%OF PEOPLEWITH TYPE IDIABETES AND 28%OF PEOPLE WITH TYPE 2DIABETES MAY DEVELOPRETINAL CHANGES ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND ROBOTICS Prof. Goes: Robot-assisted surgery has made itsentrance in ophthalmic surgeries but, compared withother disciplines in medicine, we ophthalmologists--withsome exceptions--are lagging behind in its use.
