Abstract

For the first time, the paper provides a complete professional biography of Milica Vojinović (1895–1990), a librarian at the Belgrade University Library. Her contributions are evident in founding the Association of Yugoslav Librarians (1931– 1940); being a secretary of the Association and attempting to organize librarianship during the Second World War by preparing drafts for the Librarian’s Course and Instructions for the Work of High School Libraries (1943); teaching young librarians during and after the Second World War; managing the Department for Libraries at the Ministry of Education (1946–1947); participating in the establishment of the Association of Librarians of the People’s Republic of Serbia; editing the journal Bibliotekar (Librarian) (1948–1960), and managing the Section for Mass Libraries of the Association of Librarians of the People’s Republic of Serbia and the District Library Center in Belgrade (1955–1959). She authored over 40 papers in the journal Bibliotekar. This paper is based on rich archival material and more modest published sources, and it concludes that Milica Vojinović played an extremely important role in building librarianship as a profession in Serbia.
