Abstract

The current trend in mobile communicationis based on a centralized communication infrastructure(cellular network). It is a good and efficient system, butthe cellular network system depends on that centralizedstructure. A fault in any of the cellular communicationsystem due to uncertain circumstances such as war ornatural disaster, may cause the whole communicationsystem to fail. Reinstalling or restarting the system becomesdifficult and costly too. To overcome this, the system usesMANET (Mobile Ad-hoc Network) to create instant and ondemandcommunication. MANET is suitable for creatinga personal and secure network for communication undersuch situations. MANET creates a network without usingthe pre-existing infrastructure. MANET is a reliable, self-repairing,wireless, dynamic infrastructure, and is independentof the central administration system. MANET is self-configuringand can be set up randomly and on-demand. This paper introduces the routing protocols and aspects ofa MANET protocol in meeting the challenges of a dynamicenvironment. This paper also presents the performancemetric analysis of various routing protocols in MANET. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
