Abstract

The Thoroughbred breed, considered a king of galloping, developed in England during the 17th - 18th centuries, by mating mares on the island with stallions brought from the East of Berber region, Turkoman and Arab origin. Historical records mark the stallions Darley Arabian (1704), Byerley Turk (1680) and Godolphin Barb (1729) as the founders of the lines. Other stallions that contributed to the development of the breed but were less influential were: Alcock’s Arabian, D’Arcy’s White Turk, Leedes Arabian, and Curwen’s Bay Barb and Brownlow Turk, the latter being considered to be the one that caused the appearance of the gray color in the Thoroughbred breed.
