Abstract

US foreign policy has played a critical role in shaping anti-drug polices in Latin America. The use of military power as a tool of US foreign policy has had a serious impact upon the political climate and economic stability of the region. It is our intent to show the degree to which the US military and federal law enforcement agencies have played a role in anti-drug policies, particularly in Colombia involving the Cali and Medellin Cartels. We also examine how drug cartels have changed in response to actions taken against them by both the US and Colombian governments. Finally, we compare current United States and Latin American policy with efforts to control the flow of drugs within the United States. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
