Abstract

This paper presents evidence that the increase in FDI flows from Spain to LA in the 1990’s has generated a reduction in bilateral conflict between the US and Spain. In fact, these investments have strengthened the relationship (generated an increase in cooperation) that helps to explain why Spain, along with the UK, proved to be the United States’ closest European allies during the conflict with Iraq in 2003.
